Hummingbird Hygiene
Keeping your hummingbird feeders clean is arguably more important than the nectar itself. Mold and bacteria can grow quickly, especially in the heat, which can be fatal to the birds.
A simple water and white vinegar solution is the gold standard for routine cleaning because it’s effective, non-toxic, and doesn't leave behind the harmful residues that dish soap or bleach might.
The Recipe & Process
The Cleaning Solution
- Ratio: 1-part white distilled vinegar to 2-parts hot water. Example: mix 1 cup of vinegar with 2 cups of hot water.
- The Deep Soak: Empty any leftover nectar and rinse the feeder with plain water.
- Submerge all parts of the feeder (bottles, bases, and flowers) in your vinegar solution.
- Let it soak for 15–20 minutes. This helps break down stubborn sugar scale and kills most bacteria.
- Scrub & Rinse: Use a bottle brush for the reservoir and a small "nipple brush" or pipe cleaner for the feeding
ports. - Crucial Step: Rinse the feeder thoroughly with cool running water until the smell of vinegar is
completely gone. Hummingbirds have a sensitive sense of taste and smell!
